The Rothbury Festival !!

I took some time out over the 4th to volunteer at the Rothbury Festival in Rothbury, Michigan. It was the first festival for the Double JJ Ranch, which is a (until this event) family oriented dude ranch and water park. What an amazing time. Four days and over 40,000 wonderful and extremely polite people. Reminded me of hippies - everyone in tie dye, long flowing skirts and dreadlocks.

Here are a few pictures that I snapped along the way.

A little mud.
Lots of rain the day before made quite a mess. Thank goodness the rest of the weekend was beautiful.

Drying out.

The Art !

The food drive
According to one of the organizers, these 15 55-gallon drums of canned and non-perishable food were collected the 2nd night of the festival. This was only one of the collection sites at the festival. She also told me that their organization travels to all large gatherings to collect food for the local food pantries and that in the FIRST THREE HOURS of the festival they broke their previous record for food collections. This year the food went to the Shiloh Tabernacle Food Bank in Muskegon, MI

A sculpture made from some of the cans collected.

The Painted Girls
These girls were beautiful but since I did not ask permission to post their pictures and do not know how to get a hold of them, I thought it was best to hide their faces.

The closest it came to heavy metal music!
Anyone could step up and bang on the metal "instruments".

Always a line for money.
One of many ATM banking sites.

Tie dye anyone?
Almost every vendor selling the stuff.

Recovering

Some of the many people taxis.
$5.00 a person

A concert

Saving the bird.
These 4 guys sought advice from others on how to safely remove this tiny baby bird from the festival grounds. Like cowboys, they herded him to the nearby woods.

State Boys
They came in cars, SUV's, motorcycles and even golf carts.

Shower time
Here's how most showered.

The Gong Show
People thought this was great. They could have charged for it. I didn't see it but I am assuming they had a tip jar somewhere.

Mechanical bull
All I could think was "I hope they have good insurance"

My station
After 21 hours (not continous thank goodness)I didn't collect enough garbage to fill one black landfill bag. I did, however, collect lots and lots of green compost and clear recycle bags

Water station
Here is one of the drinking water refilling stations

On a very different note, it was unfortunate that two people lost their lives during the festival. No details have been released as far as names or the cause of death as of this writing. A sad ending to a otherwise fantastic festival.
